And so my story goes, the
tale of childhood woes
Bio:
Native southern son, B-ham, Bama, you know the one
Civil rights, civil strife, black history, black misery
Jim Crow, living low, church bombings, M. L. King
We are still listening for the freedom to ring.
Nevertheless, this was the place,
where on 9-1-83, I showed my face
Welcomed to the world by a teenaged girl,
Mama plus big bro sharing my space
She did her best to groom us right,
“keep your head up and your mind tight”
Days of my childhood all ran together,
playing from morning to night.
But childhood too quickly ends,
and too quickly, boys must become men.
And really, this is where my story begins.
School for me was a playground
No real knowledge was ever found.
Day in, day out I played along - Showed up to show out
History? A mystery. I only cared about the here and now
On and on my story goes . . .
A chance for a new beginning, Mama hesitantly chose
She sent me to the ATL to stay with Dad
He introduced me to tough love and discipline I never had
You've heard it before, you know how it goes-
I rebelled and fought back
And before I knew it my bags were packed.
The Lucky Boyz, my lifelong friends
Welcomed me back to the West End
Together we set out to make it right for ours
The master plan was to claim the power
Self-appointed men of our homes
We kept it real for real, we brought the storm
But the winds of change were strong and deep
And we found ourselves behind bars with no keys
Freedom awakened my every sense
I had seen the light and my commitment was tense
To change myself, the new revised plan
I wanted to become a better man
The path less taken was the path that I chose
Used my energy for transforming life into prose
I opened my gift for expression with my pen
Released were my thoughts and feelings from within
Educated, graduated from B.E. Mays
D.R.I.V.E.N., a Christian camp, helped with my insight for future days
A trip to Africa with my Dad was like winning the grand prize
Ghana fed my soul and opened my eyes
My poetry, my story it tells you who I am
How I was lost but now I am found
Love me or hate me Feel me or not
My resolve is strong and as solid as a rock
Now I know whom to reach
It's my turn to teach |
