“All I want people to know is that I'm incredibly sexy."
So states Josh Horton, lead singer and frontman from the alternative
band, Jackit. And it's that kind of irreverence and humor with which
this incredibly talented and hard driving group delivers its' music both
live and on disc.
To date, the only thing famous to emerge from Sylacauga, Alabama is Jim
Nabors -- a.k.a. Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. Also from that fair city, as Jackit,
Josh Horton (vocals), Jonathan Moore (guitar), Kenny Hodges (lead
guitar), Chris Gardner (bass) and Clovis Stevenson (drums) plan to
change all that.
The band was created on New Years' eve 2001 when former high school
classmates Josh and Jonathan were winding down from a night on the
"South Side," Birmingham, Alabama's favorite party spot just about an
hour from the boys' hometown. Being a punk in the middle of the "South
Side" inspired the duo that the time had come to try something, anything
-- different. Jonathan notes, "This is a town of 13,000 people that
think TV is the devil, so we knew we had something to say." It wasn't
long before they enlisted the assistance of the remainder of the group
-- Kenny, Chris and Clovis -- and began their assault to become, (as
track six states - "I wish I was") "Famous," as Jackit.
The band's debut,
Picture Yourself Here on Raw Deal Records explores a
variety of topics relevant to 2003. The line-up includes "Soundcheck",
"Away", "Version 6.0", "Cheating With Blondes" (Josh says, "It'll get
you in trouble with your girlfriend."), "Right Now", "Famous",
"Nameless", "Jellybeans", "Night of the Living Dead", "Rainy Afternoon",
"On My Own" and a hidden tune, "Statutory."
Combining their raw instincts and ambition with a growing following in
the "skater" community, Jackit has been aggressively attacking the music
scene, performing for anybody who'll listen. On the recording, the
band's sound, behind Josh's aggressive delivery and Clovis' driving beat
is 100% original. Josh notes, "We don't really sound like anybody else.
I think that's why we've started attracting a loyal following and
continue to attract so much interest in what we're doing."
The first of a five album deal with TC Payton's Raw Deal Records,
Picture Yourself Here marks the band's entrée into the national
spotlight and an exciting time for Josh, Jonathan and the rest of the
crew. Jonathan notes, "I worked for Capital One riding people about
their credit card payments and Josh cut grass -- we have a lot of grass
around here - so we're looking forward to seeing what's out there."
After the rest of the country gets an earful of Jackit, no doubt there
will be thousands of kids who'd love to change places with the boys from
Sylacauga and would die to "Picture Yourself Here.”
